3 Chinese Classes At Washtenaw Community College

Hello! Da-jia hao! I'm offering three Chinese classes at Washtenaw Community College, starting in February 2010. I hope to see you there! We'll have lots of fun learning basic conversations. We'll delve into some essential Chinese characters, too.

For detailed information about each class, just have a look at the introductions below. If you have any questions -- including how to register! -- feel free to email me at kimfu@umich.edu or call me at 734-669-0188.

See you in class! Qi-dai gen ni-men jian-mian!

Chinese Conversation 1

8 Wednesday nights, from February 3 to March 24
7:00 -- 9:00pm
Ni hao! (Hello!) In this class, you'll take your first steps toward learning the language spoken by 1/5th of the world's population. You'll discover how to greet people, give simple information about yourself, say numbers up to 100, and order in a restaurant. You'll reinforce these newfound skills through lively, in-class conversations. Are you eager to learn about Chinese culture? Then check out the course website, which posts many articles about current events, daily life, travel, and history. At semester's end, you and your classmates will celebrate your learning experience by ordering a complete meal at a Chinese banquet. See you in class!

Chinese Conversation 2

7 Wednesday nights, from April 7 to May 19
7:00 -- 9:15pm

Duo-shao qian? (How much is it?) In this class you'll continue your discovery of Chinese by delving into the world of money, shopping, and bargaining. You'll also expand your ability to converse outside the marketplace. Plus, you'll take your language experience to a whole new level by learning Chinese characters, including the ones in your Chinese name. Don't forget to explore the class website. There, you'll find a trove of information about the culture as well as exciting local Chinese events. Crown a semester of learning by sitting down to a Chinese banquet, where you and your classmates will do all of the ordering.

Chinese Conversation 3

7 Wednesday nights, from June 2 to July 14
7:00 -- 9:15pm

Zhe shi wo peng-you! (This is my friend!) This phase of your Chinese journey will take you to days of the week, months of the year, and dates. You'll learn to make introductions, too, and talk about your family and friends. You'll also continue working with Chinese characters. Are you keen for more? Then just turn to the class website. It's filled with links to additional language and culture sites. Finally, get ready for a delicious end-of-semester feast. You'll be in charge of telling the waiter what goes on the table -- in Chinese, of course!
